MASCo Cast Iron Fireplaces

Cast iron surrounds, inserts and integral units became popular in Victorian drawing rooms and bedrooms, produced in quantity in the foundries of North West England and Scotland throughout the late 1700 and 1800’s. Design improvements are marked in the 1790’s with Count Rumford’s designs, later improved in the 1850’s, aiming to reduce the amount of smoke coming into the room, coal consumption and increase the output of heat. Ornamentation reflected the popular style of the day from early scroll work and garlands, coats of arms and later floral design of Art Nouveau and Aesthetic Movements, practical designs included trivets. Often the surrounds were inset with decorative ceramic tiles both colourful and greatly varied often designed by well known artists of the day, William Morris, William De Morgan of the Arts and Crafts Movement made at Minton, Maw and Goodwin Potteries.

MASCO offers a selection of refurbished original cast iron surrounds with a delivery and installation service when possible.
