Gates Architectural Features

Much of the original decorative metal work found in our towns and villages was claimed for the production of armaments during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Now highly sought after, traditional hand forged wrought-iron gates and railings are very rare.
Designs can vary from simple hoop railings to the floral scroll ironwork of the grand entrance gates. The most prestigious gates and railing were painted in ‘royal’ blue and the floral scroll decoration highlighted in gold leaf and occasionally other colours.
Victorian metalwork manufacturers supplied hoop and arrow head railing in standard lengths and a choice of either black or a dark green paint finish. This simple standard design was manufactured by the local foundry and ordered from the ironmonger’s catalogue.
High quality wrought-iron gates and railing, wide enough to fit a contemporary driveway opening are rare; Masco offers a bespoke service supplying a selection of period style gates and railings. This service includes, design, manufacture and fitting with options for automatic opening devices.
